Annie Ruth Matthews was born September 29, 1930 in Randolph County to the late Otha Willard Matthews and Leora Brooks Matthews. She exchanged this temporary life for life eternal on Wednesday, June 22, 2022 at Moses Cone Memorial Hospital in Greensboro, NC.
Annie was preceded in death by her sisters: Helen Matthews, Desiree Matthews-Brown, Eula Mae Matthews-McClain, Linda Lou MatthewsGraves, Ocie Matthews-Brown, Delsie Matthews-Hilton and Shelia Pearl Matthews-Guin as well as her brothers, James Wesley Matthews and Otha Willard Matthews, Jr.
She professed hope in Jesus Christ at an early age and was actively involved in many facets of Christian education at Oliver’s Chapel A.M.E Zion Church in Staley, NC. She was educated in the public schools of Randolph County and graduated from Liberty School. She furthered her education in the New Jersey/Philadelphia area, earning her LPN and working several years in that profession before returning to North Carolina. She worked at Wake Forest Baptist Hospital in Winston-Salem, NC for 30 plus years, earning several awards for excellence.
Though she never married and had no children, she was instrumental in the raising of her nieces and nephews. She was affectionally called Aunt Kib. She loved her church and would travel faithfully with her devoted sister, Delsie from Winston-Salem to Staley for church as well as attending annual conferences. Annie served on several church boards and committees: Stewardess Board, Senior Citizens’ Day Committee, Bulletin Board Committee and the Altar Guild as well as being a life member of the Missionary Society.
Annie was an avid reader and made weekly trips to the Southside Branch Library of Winston-Salem. She kept her home filled with books as well as beautiful flowers and plants. Annie was very independent and enjoyed her life at Saint Peter’s World Outreach Senior Citizens Complex. She attended the Sprague Street Senior Lunch program for many years until her health began to decline. Annie was the last Matthews sibling, and we know there was a wonderful reunion in heaven when God called her home.
Annie’s beautiful memory will always be cherished by her nieces, nephews as well as a host of relatives, church members, friends and good neighbors. She lived an humble and sweet life. Her smile and laughter were contagious. She was a beautiful example of strength, dignity and exemplary character.
The Matthews family is profoundly grateful to Ms. Celestine Oree of St. Peter’s World Outreach Senior Citizens Complex for assisting in the care of our beloved Aunt Kib.
