Steve Lewis Mitchell was born October 14, 1953 to the late Charles W. Mitchell and Eugenia Cheek Mitchell. Born in Chatham County, he is the second oldest of five.
He kept to himself as a child, finding interest in building things with his hands. Graduating from Eastern Randolph Senior High School in 1971, he enlisted in the United States Navy where he was a helicopter technician. After he was honorably discharged, he married and started a family. From that union, three children were born.
