Johnny “Coot” Eugene Smith, the son of the Late Archie B. Smith and Elizabeth N. Smith departed this life from labor to reward on Friday, August 20, 2021, at UNC Hospital, Chapel Hill, North Carolina.  He was educated at Chatham High School, Siler City, North Carolina.

At an early age Johnny joined Holy Trinity U.H. Church and enjoyed serving as an usher.  He attended Bible Study, the Men’s Prayer Breakfast and Morning Worship services.  One of his favorite songs was “He’s An On Time God”.  Johnny loved people—he did not meet a stranger and could carry on a conversation with anyone.

He was preceded in death by his parents, and brothers, Gary Steven Smith and Russell Williams.

He leaves to celebrate his life and cherish his memories:  Judy Rodriguez (Gregorio), Deborah Alston, Sylvia Annette Foxx (James), and Michelle Smith of Siler City, North Carolina; brothers, Donald Smith (Lisa), and Michael Smith (Ivey) of Siler City, North Carolina and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends.

Don’t grieve for me for now I’m free,

I’m following the path God laid for me

I took His hand when I heard him call,

I turned my back and left it all.

I could not stay another day,

To laugh, to love, to work or play

Tasks left undone must stay that way,

I’ve found that peace at the close of day.

If my parting has left a void,

Then fill it with remembered joy

A friendship shared, a laugh, a kiss,

Ah yes, these things I too will miss.

Be not burdened with times of sorrow,

I wish for you the sunshine of tomorrow

My life’s been full, I’ve savored much,

Good friends, good times, my loved one’s touch.

If my time seemed all too brief,

Don’t lengthen it now with undue grief

Lift up your heart, rejoice with me,

God wanted me now, He set me free.
