Mr. Alphonzo Womble Obituary

Alphonzo Womble was bom May 4, 1937 to the late Will Tracey Womble and Cora White Womble. He transitioned to his heavenly home on April 27, 2020 at Summerville Community Hospice House in Summerville, SC

Alphonzo attended Chatham County Schools and graduated from Goldston High School, Goldston, NC. He was the youngest child and was only 3 when his mother passed. He was loved and cared for by his older siblings and eventually lived with his older brother, Willie and his family, until adulthood.

In 1961, Alphonzo met and fell in love with Etta Mae Jeffries. They were married two years later on July 14, 1963. Alphonzo was a hard worker and was always supportive of his family. In 1967, Alphonzo and Etta Were blessed with their only son Michael Lynn Womble. Alphonzo was a devoted husband and father and worked hard to support his family. He drove trucks as a profession, working for CC Routh Mills and eventually retiring from Townsend Mills.

Funny, (short for Alphonzo), as he was affectionately called by many, was dedicated to his family, kind to his fellow man, a good neighbor, and friend. When his wife's health failed, he did all he could to care for her. He was a loving and devoted husband for 55 years 6 months.

Funny, was a loyal member of Centennial AME Zion Church where he served many years as a Steward, Trustee and Usher. Alphonzo loved God and followed Christ, exemplifying a servant's heart and a humble spirit. He loved his fellow man, appreciated the beauty of nature, enjoyed watching sports and westerns, cherished good conversations and appreciated every kindness shown to him.

Alphonzo will be missed by many, but he will be sorely missed by his son, daughter-in-law and three grandsons who brought an unimaginable amount of pride and joy to his life. His kind manner, peaceful and gentle ways made him a special person in the hearts of many.

Alphonzo was preceded in death by his parents, his beloved wife, Etta Mae Jeffries Womble, his siblings, Charles Womble, Willie Womble, Pearl Marsh, Blanche Mezeke and Betty Spinks.

Left to mourn the loss and cherish his memory; his loving and dedicated son, Michael (Amanda) of Charleston, SC, three grandsons, Azel Micah, Adam Michael and Avery Matthias Womble, of Charleston, SC: one sister-in-law, Annie (Nan) Womble, of High Falls, NC; a nieve with whom he was reared, Willie Mae Thompson; and numerous other loving nieces, nephews and friends.
