Keith Reives Obituary

Keith Douglas Reives peacefully took his eternal rest on Monday, November 27, 2023, at the age of 72. Born on November 21, 1951, in Siler City, North Carolina. Keith was the cherished son of Clem McKinley Reives, Jr., and Callie Bernice Lane Reives, one of seven children. In 1975, Keith married the lovely, Brenda Kay Alston Reives. They were married for 41 years until her passing in 2016.

From an early age, Keith found joy in working alongside his grandfather, James Wagner Lane, displaying a diligent work ethic uncommon for peers his age. He went on to attend Chatham High School until 11th grade and then graduated from Jordan-Matthews High School in Siler City, NC in June 1971.  Keith's passion for sports shone brightly in his younger years, as an avid baseball and football player. It’s a legacy that lives on in his daughters and grandchildren, seen especially today in his namesake and grandson, Jason Keith Bright.

Keith's sense of community extended to various aspects of his life. He became a member of Corinth AME Zion Church in his youth, attending Sunday School regularly, and generously supporting church activities. His wife’s church, Centennial AME Zion Church recognized Keith for his ongoing generosity to the community, and his consistent support of the church’s benevolent activities.  Keith's sense of community extended to many aspects of his life, beginning as a young man as a proud member of the Boy Scouts of America and during his membership and service with the Goldston Star Lodge #688.

Keith's career path led him to numerous successful ventures, notably his great passion for the trucking industry. Known by his handle, “Oil Can” to fellow truckers Keith began his career at Raeford Trucking Co. in Sanford, NC. He later joined Boise Cascade Co. in Moncure, NC.  From there, he ventured out on his own becoming one of the youngest Black entrepreneurs in his community. In September 1989, Keith Reives Trucking Company was born, successfully delivering products nationwide.

Keith had a heart that thrived on bringing joy to others by opening his home to family and friends from near and far. He was well known for the many talents he brought to the art of celebrating and fellowship, whether it was firing up the grill or tearing up the dance floor. Keith found immense pleasure in creating moments of happiness for those around him. His love for music and dance added an extra layer of joy to the gatherings he hosted, leaving priceless memories for those fortunate enough to have joined in the celebrations in the Reives home. He found joy in spending time with family and friends, a testament to his warm and welcoming spirit.

The memories from the celebration of Keith's 70th birthday party will be cherished by his family and friends forever. Surrounded by the warmth of loved ones, he reveled in the joy of the moment, marking seven decades of a life well-lived. The laughter, camaraderie, and love shared on that special occasion encapsulates the essence of Keith's commitment to family and the bonds he held dear.

Preceding him in death were his beloved wife, Brenda Kay Alston Reives; his parents, Clem McKinley Reives, Jr. and Callie Bernice Lane Reives; infant sister Ellen Simone; Sherman McKinley Reives (brother), James Tyrone Reives (brother); Rodney Pierre Reives (nephew); maternal grandparents, James Wagner Lane and Lina Siler Lane;  paternal grandparents, Clem McKinley Reives and Emma Bruce Reives. We take comfort in knowing that they are all reunited in eternal rest.

His family was the most treasured part of his considerable heart. Keith is survived by his loving daughters, Dr. Patrice Reives-Bright (Jerry) of Merrick, NY, Lakeisha Best (Edward) of Atlanta, GA, and Courtney Reives of Durham, NC. His legacy lives on through his cherished grandchildren, Jasmine Bright, Jason Bright, Edward Best, IV and Kayla Best.  Keith also leaves to mourn his memory his brothers, Garry Reives of Siler City, NC and Eric Reives of Lithonia, GA and sister, Angela Reives of Greensboro, NC.  Keith will be greatly missed by his nephews Brent and Jeffrey Reives, Jeffrey Taylor, niece Crystal Waddell; a special great-nephew, Joshua Gutierrez and his devoted companion  Ms. Diane Degraffenreaidt.

Lastly, Keith leaves behind 18 first cousins, with whom he shared a special brother-sister bond that transcends physical absence. Keith will be remembered for his hard work, dedication, and the lasting impact he made on the lives of those fortunate enough to have known him and shared even one laugh with him. May he rest in eternal peace.

II Corinthians 5:1 For we know that if the tent that is our earthly home is destroyed, we have a building from God, a house not made with hands, eternal in the heavens.
